(02.07.2012) It is known that in the past people were able to travel by train to Thalaimannar and proceed to Danushkodi in India by boat by purchasing a ticket of Rs. 360. During that period, a majority of those who travelled in this manner were Sinhalese and Muslims. They took coconut oil, soap, spices etc to South India and on their return brought sarees, sarongs, aluminium products etc. As they were able to travel by train to Thalaimannar and take about 100 kgs of items as cargo, the bartering trade at that time was a very profitable one.- by Director General, Media Centre for National Development

(02.07.2012) The refurbished Jayathilake Sports Complex in Nawalapitiya was launched by President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the invitation of Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage amid a massive crowd in Nawalapitiya yesterday. The Nawalapitiya Jayathilake Sports Complex, which was redeveloped at a cost of Rs 250 million, is the first of the nine well equipped and perfect provincial level sports complexes under the ‘Regional Sports Facilities and Complexes Development Program’ launched by the Sports Ministry.

Major water supply Projects 2012 update...

Greater Kandy Water Supply Project Phase I Stage II (JICA & Sri Lankan Funds) The objective of this project is to improve the service level for 432,800 people in Greater Kandy, which includes the Kandy Municipal Council (KMC) area, Ampitiya, Rajapihilla, Kulugammana, Nugawela, Heerassagala, Meekanuwa, Mullepihilla, Elhena, Gohagoda, Kondadeniya and Thelambugahawatta. The total cost of stage II is Rs. 4,164 million. The treatment plant capacity will be increased from 37,000 to 50,000 cu.m/day under this project, started in 2007. The physical progress of the project was about 92% and it is planned to be completed in 2012.
