(09.10.2012) The government plans to develop economy and
infrastructure facilities of Ratnapura, the country's gem-mining center
of Sri Lanka. The government has decided to establish a separate street for the gem
business in the famous gem city to provide modern facilities for the gem
merchants, the customers, local and foreign visitors.
(09.10.2012) The Economic Development Ministry has planned to uplift the
livelihood of five million families under the fourth phase of the Divi
Neguma National Programme to obtain their contribution to the
development of the economy.The ministry also made arrangements to obtain the support of other
state institutes as well in this endeavour, ministry sources said. All
home gardens will receive 10 varieties of seed under this programme.

(29.08.2012) A high level Chinese delegation led by Defence Minister Liang Guanglie will arrive in Sri Lanka today for a five day official visit. Liang’s visit follows the visit of Army Commander Lt. Gen Jagath Jayasuriya to Beijing in June.
(29.08.2012) The European Union will provide Sri Lanka a grant amounting to approximately Rs 9 billion (EUR 60 million) under the European Union- support to District Development programme spanning over 2012 – 2017 said Head of Delegation of the European Union in Sri Lanka Bernard Savage when he met Senior Adviser to the President and Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa together with United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Representative in Sri Lanka Subaine Nandy at the Ministry of Economic Development on Monday.
(27.08.2012) Construction work to develop the Batticaloa domestic airport will be initiated by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on September 3. The Government has decided to upgrade the airport following a proposal made in the 2012 Budget to develop the country’s domestic airports.

(16.08.2012) Sri Lanka would own its own communication satellite by 2015.This would be South Asia’s most modern and largest communication satellite and the first to be owned by the private sector in the region. Supreme Sat would own and operate this satellite from their space centre in Kandy for which the foundation stone was laid on Tuesday.
