(30.04.2013) Work on developing 6,000 schools selected under Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa’s combined national campaign to develop 5,000 elementary schools and 1,000 secondary schools is now nearing completion and will be ready for use by May 5.

(22.04.2013) The tile industry which was on the decline has been revived under Divi Neguma national programme thus opening avenues of employment for over 10,000 people. This follows 156 tile factories resuming operations.

(16.04.2013) Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa on April 15th welcomed British Airways’ decision to resume flights to Sri Lanka after a 15-year break.  The flights were suspended in the 1990’s owing to the island’s security situation at the time.

(01.04.2013) The Veyangoda flyover now being built on a request made by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa to meet the rush hour-traffic congestion in the Veyangoda town is scheduled to be opened in September. Eighty percent of the work on the flyover is now complete.

(22.02.2013) The Economic Development Ministry will commission a number of development projects covering agriculture, irrigation, education, health, drinking water and power supply, completed at a cost of Rs. 10,625 million in the Polonnaruwa, Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomalee Districts parallel to the Deyata Kirula National Exhibition 2013 which will be held at Ampara from March 23 to March 29.  The theme of the exhibition will be ‘Wonder of the Rising Sun.’

(19.03.2013) Arrangements are being made to open next August, the 26 kilometre-long Katunayake - Kelaniya Expressway built at a cost of 291 million US dollars.  The Ports and Highways Ministry commenced the construction of the express way in 2009 under the direction of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
