2. Towns South of Kandy Water Supply Project (Denmark & Sri Lankan Funds)
This project will meet the water requirements of 360,000 beneficiaries by 2025. It covers the Udunuwara and Yatinuwara Divisional Secratary Divisions and parts of Gangawata Korale, Udapalatha and Ganga Ihala Korale. Towns served by the project include Peradeniya, Pilimatalawa, Kadugannawa, Murutalawa, Danture, Gampola, Ulapane and Welamboda. The revised project cost of Rs. 9,626 million is funded by the Governments of Denmark and Sri Lanka.
The physical progress of the projects was about 97%. Few minor contracts under the local budget are on-going and about 75% of work related to these contracts were completed by the end of 2011.
3. Greater Dambulla Water Supply Scheme (Indian & Sri Lankan Funds)
The project scope includes to construct 30,000 cu.m./day capacity WTP and supply and laying of distribution and transmission mains. About 60,000 people living in Dambulla Town and suburban areas will benefit from this project. The project period was started in 2012 and the TCE is Rs. 9,593 million. The contractor has mobilized and the advance payment has been paid. About 75% of the transmission pipes are supplied. Preliminary design proposals of 3 major components out of 4 have been submitted for review. Soil investigation and survey work are in progress.
4. Towns North of Colombo Water Supply Project Stage II (JICA & Sri Lankan Funds)
Towns North of Colombo Water Supply Project funded by JICA is designed to extend water supply services to the northern part of Greater Colombo. Upon full implementation of the project, transmission and distribution facilities will be provided for Ja-Ela, Kandana, Ragama, Welisara, Ekala, Mahara, Ganemulla and Biyagama with a target to serve a population of 250,000. Stage I of this project was completed in November 2006. Total revised cost estimate for the stage II of the project is Rs. 4,870 million from JICA and Rs. 1,620 from the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL). The project was started in November 2007.
The physical progress of the projects is about 91%. A large number of requests have been received for pipeline extensions in the areas where the originally planned networks do not cover. Most pipeline extensions are being provided and new connections are being given. The project is expected to be completed in 2012.
5. Greater Colombo Water Rehabilitation Project (JICA & Sri Lankan Funds)
The main objective of this project is to reinforce the water storage system in Colombo City area, to improve the water system in Kotikawatte - Mulleriyawa, and to increase the transmission capacity from Ambatale to Gothatuwa. This is a JICA assisted project and the Total Cost Estimate is Rs. 4,785 million. The project will benefit 100,000 people in the area.
The physical progress is about 71%. The project was commenced in November 2007 and is expected to be completed in 2012.
6. Kalu Ganga Water Supply Project Phase I Stage II (JICA & Sri Lankan Funds)
The scope of the project includes construction of a 60,000 cu.m./day treatment plant, a transmission main from the plant to Piliyandala and distribution in the Kesbewa and Horana areas. Stage I of the project which includes construction of intake, treatment plant, pumping main and main reservoir has been completed. This project will benefit 400,000 people in Colombo and Kalutara Districts. This stage will cover Gonapola, Kumbuka, Koralaima, Kahathuduwa, Polgasowita, Kesbewa, Panadura and Jamburaliya.
Estimated cost of the work under stage II is Rs. 10,846 million. The physical progress of the project was about 58%. The project started in July 2007 will be completed by December 2013.
7. Capacity Development for NRW Reduction in Colombo City (JICA & Sri Lankan Funds)
Main objective of this project is capacity development for NRW reduction in Colombo City. Two pilot zones, Borella and Kotahena have been selected and equipment required for establish NRW in the two zones have been received. System improvements to reduce NRW in the two selected zones such as pipe replacement, valve and meter repairs or replacement, removal of illegal connections etc. will be carried out. This project is to benefit 267,000 people in the area. The estimated cost is Rs. 200 million. Overall progress is about 48% and it is expected to be completed the project in 2012.
8. Augmentation of Negombo Water Supply Project (Netherland & Sri Lankan Funds)
This project aims to increase the capacity of the Negombo water supply scheme by constructing an intake and additional treatment facilities. The number of beneficiaries through this project is 198,000 by 2011 and 215,000 by 2025. The total estimated cost is Rs.7,288 million. The project encompasses the construction of a new 12,500 cu.m./day capacity treatment plant at Bambukuliya, together with transmission and distribution systems to improve supplies to the presently-served area and supply currently unserved Duwa, Pitipana and Kochchikade areas. Treated water quantity of 21,000 cu.m/day is transmitted from Kelani Right Bank treatment plant additionally.
The Physical progress is 95% while the water treatment plant has been completed and commissioned in September 2011.
9. Kelani Right Bank Water Treatment Plant (Denmark & Sri Lankan Funds)
This is a water supply project assigned with a high priority and was launched with an objective to improve water supply facilities in Gampaha and Colombo District. It is intended to feed the distribution network laid under the Towns North of Colombo Project funded by JICA. The project comprises an intake of 40 MGD capacity and a similar capacity treatment plant to be constructed on the right bank of the Kelani River at Ambatale. The revised total estimated cost is Rs. 10,150 million. No. of beneficiaries are 1,500,000.
The Physical progress of the project is about 95%.
10. Ruhunupura Water Supply Development Project – (Korean & Sri Lankan Funds)
This is a new project to serve 112,000 people by the design horizon in 2025. Water source is Ridiyagama tank. Funding source is the Korean Government. The total cost estimate is Rs. 13,131 million. The proposed Ruhunupura Water Supply Project is planned to provide drinking water to Ruhunupura and Mahaweli Development areas.
Construction of water treatment plant has been started. The Physical progress of the project is about 29%. The project was started in 2010 and it will be completed in 2014.
11. Kolonna and Balangoda Water Supply (Belgium & Sri Lankan Funds)
Main components are 7,700 cu.m./day capacity water treatment plant, intake, ground reservoirs, (1,000 cu.m.), water tanks (1,500 cu.m.), 25 km long Ductile Iron transmission and distribution network. About 117,500 people in Aereporuwa, Kolonna, Maduwanwela, Nandanagama, Balangoda and Samanalawewa areas will be benefited from this project. The total cost estimate is Rs. 4,658 million. Procurement and design work are in progress while construction will be started towards the end of the 2012.
12. Providing Water Supply & Sewerage Facilities to Internally Displaced Persons’ (IDPs) Welfare Centres at Vavuniya & Jaffna Districts (JICA & Sri Lankan Funds)
Main activities are construction of septage treatment plant at Pompemadu, procurement of equipment to strength activities for drinking water facilities to Internally Displaced Persons and procurement of equipment and instruments for groundwater investigation and related activities at resettlement phase. The total estimated cost is Rs. 303 million.
Construction of septage treatment plant was completed in the 1st quarter of this year and is now functioning satisfactorily. Most of the equipment have been already delivered to the Vavuniya and being utilized fully for operation and maintenance activities of the existing and IDP WSSs. These equipment are highly instrumental for water supply activities in this area.
Physical progress is about 85%.
13. Jaffna Peninsula & Kilinochchi Water Supply & Sanitation (ADB & Sri Lankan Funds)
This project is to improve drinking Water Supply facilities of about 689,000 people in Jaffna city, suburbs and several townships in the Jaffna Peninsiula. It is expected to extract water from Iranamadu tank located in Kilinochchi to supplement the Ground Water sources in the Jaffna Peninsiula. Implementation will be done in two stages. The total cost estimate is Rs 18,328 million.
The Physical progress of the project is about 24%. The project was started in 2011 and it will be completed in 2017.
14. Eastern Province WS Development Project (JICA & Sri Lankan Funds)
This project is to serve about 267,000 people in Ampara area. Water resources are Mahaweli River, Konduwattuwana and Rambukkan Oya reservoir. The total cost estimate is Rs. 6,526 million and funding source is JICA. Sub projects included in the project on priority basis are transmission main from Konduwattuwana to Kalmunai distribution system for Pottuvil, Water Supply Schemes for Tsunami Housing Schemes at Uhana, Damana and Hingurana.
The Physical progress of the project is about 57%. It was started in 2010 and it is expected to be completed in 2013.
15. Integrated Water Supply Schemes for Unserved Area of Ampara District - Phase III (Australia & Sri Lankan Funds)
The main components are 12,000 cu.m./day capacity water treatment plant, ground sump (22,250 cu.m.), elevated towers, pump houses and transmission and distribution mains. About 150,000 people in Ampara area will benefit from this project. The water source is Himadurava Tank. The total cost estimate is Rs. 18,012 million.
The Physical progress of the project is about 22%. It was started in 2010 and it is expected to be completed in 2013.
16. Secondary Towns Rural Community Based Water Supply & Sanitation (ADB & Sri Lankan Funds)
Overall goal of the project is to contribute to the poverty reduction efforts of the Government of Sri Lanka and to promote the human development by improving access to safe water and sanitation for poor population; there by decreasing water borne diseases and reducing the amount of resources spent in these activities. Number of beneficiaries is 1,139,500. The total revised cost estimate of the project is Rs. 29,273 million.
The Physical progress of the project is about 93%, while it was started in 2004 and it is expected to complete in 2013.
17. Dry Zone Urban Water & Sanitation Project – (ADB & Sri Lankan Funds)
NWSDB is implementing a project for water supply and sanitation improvements in North Western and Northern Provinces of Sri Lanka. Under the above project, Vavuniya, Mannar, Chilaw and Puttalam towns will be provided with enhanced water supply and sanitation facilities as briefed in following paragraphs. The total cost estimate is Rs. 13,030 million.
The project was started in 2009 and currently it has achieved 27% overall physical progress. It will be completed by December 2015.
18. Hambantota, Ambalantota, Weligama, Kataragama WS and Badulla – Bandarawela Integrated Feasiblity Studies (Austrian & Sri Lankan Funds)
The main objective of this Austrian funded project is the provision of 28,000 new connections and service level improvements of a population of 150,000, presently served by Water Supply Schemes in Hambantota, Ambalantota, Weligama and Kataragama. Major activities are; construction of new treatment plants having capacities of 5,000 cu.m./day for Weligama and Kataragama and 7,500 cu.m./day for Ambalantota. Sella Kataragama Water Supply Scheme had been identified as an extension of the original project. The total cost estimate for the project is Rs. 2,126 million.
Physical and financial progress of the original scope was 100% completed, including Badulla - Bandarawela Integrated Feasibility Studies. Progress of additional work identified for the project is about 92%.
19. Greater Trincomalee Integrated Water Supply Project (FRANCE & Sri Lankan Funds)
The objectives of this project are to increase the production capacity of the Kantale water treatment plant to 12 MGD and increase the service level in the entire Trincomalee integrated water supply scheme. Number of beneficiaries of this project is 325,000 in Trincomalee Town & Gravets, Kantale, Thampalakamam and Kinniya District Secretariat Divisions. The total estimated cost is Rs. 4,218 million.
The project was started in 2008 and the physical progress of it is about 65%.
20. Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Programme (UNICEF & Sri Lankan Funds)
The Water Sanitation and Hygiene Programme, funded by UNICEF are for the implementation of; emergency relief activities, awareness on improvement of water quality, activities under the ground water investigation and support to strengthen the backup support for district level rural water supply units. Programmed work for this year under the project has been completed, carrying out several activities in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa & Ampara districts and Central Province, described below. The total estimated cost is Rs. 240 million.
Training and awareness programs were conducted for CBO staff. Pilot level programs for water safety plans for rural & urban water supply schemes were conducted. Water supply facilities were provided for resettled families in Northern and Eastern provinces. Financial assistances were provided to held national level programs and conferences.
21. Wastewater Disposal Systems for Ratmalana/Moratuwa and Ja-Ela/ Ekala Areas (Sweden & Sri Lankan Funds)
Total estimated cost of the project is Rs. 16,155 million out of which Rs. 11,033 million is funded by SIDA and balance Rs. 5,122 million by the Sri Lanka Government. The works contract is a Design & Build Contract which comprises of sewer network, force mains, pump stations & treatment plants for Ratmalana/Moratuwa and Ja-Ela/ Ekala areas. Treated wastewater inland water conforming will be discharged to the sea near Lunawa Lagoon in Ratmalana/ Moratuwa area and to the Dandugam Oya in Ja-Ela/ Ekala area.
Overall Physical progress of the project was about 78%. It is due to be completed in December 2014.
22. Greater Colombo Wastewater Management Project (ADB & Sri Lankan Funds)
Greater Colombo Wastewater Management Project is implemented to address the immediate requirements of sanitation within Colombo, Kolonnawa and Dehiwala/Mt. Lavinia areas. Project was started in 2009 and will be completed by 2014. CMC will implement the work within CMC area while NWSDB will implement work within Kolonnawa and Dehiwala/ Mr. Lavinia. It is proposed to rehabilitate Dehiwala/ Mt. Lavinia, Kolonnawa, Wellampitiya, Meethotamulla and Dematagoda Wastewater Pump Stations under this project. Total estimated cost of the project is Rs. 1,012 million. This project serves 700,000 inhabitants of the said area and 500,000 migrants.
Physical work of the project was started in 2012 and overall physical progress is about 2%. .
23. Kandy City Wastewater Disposal Project (JICA & Sri Lankan Funds)
The indiscriminate disposal of wastewater in the Kandy City causes pollution of the Kandy Lake, Meda Ela and finally Mahaweli River, which is the main drinking water source to Kandy and Matale districts. In order to find a permanent solution to this, the NWSDB has proposed to implement a Wastewater Disposal System for the Kandy City with the financial assistance from the Government of Japan. The proposed project intends to collect wastewater in 733 hectares of the city and then divert through a network of 85 km long pipe lines to a treatment plant of capacity 14,000 cu.m./day. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 22,585 million. The number of beneficiaries is about 616,000 people.
The project has achieved about 3% physical progress and it is expected to be completed in 2017.

Programmed work for this year under the project has been completed, carrying out several activities in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa & Ampara districts and Central Province, described below. The total estimated cost is Rs. 240 million.
Training and awareness programs were conducted for CBO staff. Pilot level programs for water safety plans for rural & urban water supply schemes were conducted. Water supply facilities were provided for resettled families in Northern and Eastern provinces. Financial assistances were provided to held national level programs and conferences.
21. Wastewater Disposal Systems for Ratmalana/Moratuwa and Ja-Ela/ Ekala Areas (Sweden & Sri Lankan Funds)
Total estimated cost of the project is Rs. 16,155 million out of which Rs. 11,033 million is funded by SIDA and balance Rs. 5,122 million by the Sri Lanka Government. The works contract is a Design & Build Contract which comprises of sewer network, force mains, pump stations & treatment plants for Ratmalana/Moratuwa and Ja-Ela/ Ekala areas. Treated wastewater inland water conforming will be discharged to the sea near Lunawa Lagoon in Ratmalana/ Moratuwa area and to the Dandugam Oya in Ja-Ela/ Ekala area.
Overall Physical progress of the project was about 78%. It is due to be completed in December 2014.
22. Greater Colombo Wastewater Management Project (ADB & Sri Lankan Funds)
Greater Colombo Wastewater Management Project is implemented to address the immediate requirements of sanitation within Colombo, Kolonnawa and Dehiwala/Mt. Lavinia areas. Project was started in 2009 and will be completed by 2014. CMC will implement the work within CMC area while NWSDB will implement work within Kolonnawa and Dehiwala/ Mr. Lavinia. It is proposed to rehabilitate Dehiwala/ Mt. Lavinia, Kolonnawa, Wellampitiya, Meethotamulla and Dematagoda Wastewater Pump Stations under this project. Total estimated cost of the project is Rs. 1,012 million. This project serves 700,000 inhabitants of the said area and 500,000 migrants.
Physical work of the project was started in 2012 and overall physical progress is about 2%. .
23. Kandy City Wastewater Disposal Project (JICA & Sri Lankan Funds)
The indiscriminate disposal of wastewater in the Kandy City causes pollution of the Kandy Lake, Meda Ela and finally Mahaweli River, which is the main drinking water source to Kandy and Matale districts. In order to find a permanent solution to this, the NWSDB has proposed to implement a Wastewater Disposal System for the Kandy City with the financial assistance from the Government of Japan. The proposed project intends to collect wastewater in 733 hectares of the city and then divert through a network of 85 km long pipe lines to a treatment plant of capacity 14,000 cu.m./day. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 22,585 million. The number of beneficiaries is about 616,000 people.
The project has achieved about 3% physical progress and it is expected to be completed in 2017.
